I’ve been a practicing medical professional since 1994 having completed my undergraduate training at Nottingham University. I gained a broad exposure to various disciplines including endocrinology, general medicine, neurosurgery, and health care of the elderly before post-graduate ophthalmic training in Nottingham and Birmingham. I completed my fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and subsequently joined the Newcastle Eye Centre located at the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital as a NHS consultant in 2008. My interests include cataract surgery, retinal vascular disorders, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and general ophthalmology.
I have lectured internationally on how to safely teach cataract surgery and published a textbook “Cataract Phacoemulsification Surgery" on the subject. I have acted as a Principle Investigator in several multi centred research trials. For several years I was the North of Tyne and Gateshead Diabetic Eye Screening Program lead. As part of my commitment to training the next generation of doctors I am part of the northern faculty of learning and development, acting as a trainer and supporting examinations. I recently stepped down in 2025 as the Head of School for ophthalmic training in the Northern deanery and currently as the clinical director for ophthalmology at the Newcastle Eye Centre. I am passionate about providing excellent eye care for my clients.
